Friendship has the power to alter the chemical make-up of the brain. Steve Lopez, a reporter for the LA Times, learned this in his interaction with Nathaniel Ayers Jr., a gifted classical musician ironically living on the streets in LA.
In The Soloist, Robert Downey Jr., portrays Steve Lopez; and with Jamie Foxx as Nathaniel Ayers Jr., they bring this moving and passionate story about friendship, music, homelessness, and mental illness to the big screen. The transformative power of music is something that can usually only be experienced; but in this film, I believe that it is eloquently demonstrated. Powerful, disturbing, encouraging…this film ranks up there with the strength and beauty of such films as The Piano, and Shine.
